Race Day 2

All is well with the airplane. Paul, the mechanic, got the vacuum pump replaced exactly as advertised. However, the weather is not giving us optimal winds/thunderstorm probability. We're currently waiting and waiting.

WELCOME!

2010 Air Race Classic Team 15 is back for our third race. This year we have swapped seats - Julia Matthews is the pilot and Arlene Wohlgemuth is the co-pilot. Start is Ft. Myers, FL and 2,483 statue miles later we will arrive at Terminus in Frederick, MD. Julia's airplane is a C-182 which should provide us with a few more options because of increased airspeed and greater fuel capacity.

Our first year (2007), the race began in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and ended at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; the second race (2008) Start was in Bozeman, Montana with Terminus in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

We leave on June 19 and the race is June 22-25. We're excited and welcome you to join us in the fun of this race that has its roots in 1929 with the Power Puff Derby and Amelia Earhart.

Bio Stuff

Julia did not have the opportunity to fly until she was 50 years old, though she’d been interested in doing so for a long time. In that year, 1995, her husband was elected to a statewide office in Texas, and they knew the benefits of being able to travel the state in a small plane. They decided it was the perfect opportunity -- she would learn to fly, and he would have a “live in” pilot to get him around to the towns he needed to visit. He held that office for 10 years, and she accumulated the ratings she needed – first private, then instrument, commercial single, and commercial multi-engine. Charles left his elected position to become Chancellor of the Texas State University System. Julia continued to fly him to the campuses scattered across the state. In these last twelve years, she has flown for training, for business, and for the pure pleasure of it. In 2009, she added CFI to her list of ratings.

Julia has recently retired from running the company she and her husband founded, Housing Administrators, Inc.. She holds a BBA in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. Charles has also retired, and they have built a log home on their farm in Hill County. Julia is the mother of four children and grandmother of six.

Arlene has been a flight instructor for 38 years. After several years of political activity which included flying her congressman around the state, she found herself running for public office and winning election in 1994. For the next ten years, she served in the Texas House. One of the bills passed by Rep. Wohlgemuth opened up Texas lakes and waterways to seaplane traffic by requiring local governments seeking to impose landing restrictions to demonstrate that safety was being compromised.

Arlene is now the Executive Director of Texas Public Policy Foundation. She is married to Mikeal , an optometrist, and has two daughters, a son-in-law, and her first grandchild on the way. She holds Commercial - Single-engine Land and Sea, Multi-engine Land, Instruments; Certified Flight Instructor – Instruments; Advanced and Instrument Ground Instructor. She also taught aerobatics and participated in aerobatic competitions.
